There is lots of great work going on in schools all over Devon, here are some schools that are doing really well.
Chagford Primary School
The school installed 6 raised beds in spring 2011, with the intention to grow food to supplement the kitchen. Each class has its own veg bed set up with the vegetable rotation system. Raw kitchen waste goes into the Jora composter and Scotty Hot boxes. The garden is used regularly in all curriculum subjects and picked flowers grace most classrooms in the summer. We have run 3 successful School Farmers’ Markets including one combined with and Apple Pressing day. We have a popular After School Bee Club. Our wildlife area is used for Forest School sessions both during school and After School Club.

We have started a new mini business based around our allotment where we grow lots of produce. We will sell the produce to our own kitchen, parents and another local business, Orchards Farm shop. We have sold salad vegetables and artichokes to Orchards and leeks, potatoes, courgettes and marrows to parents. At our local market, held in the school playground, anybody can sell produce from gardens or kitchens! MARKET KIDS & Co., also make bread, cakes, chutneys and jams to sell at these markets. Profits go back into buying new equipment for the allotment & to further promote MARKET KIDS & Co.

Over the past 4 years some of the grounds have slowly come under the management of staff and children. We have created a ‘quiet area’ that consists of a hen house and run, a wildflower area to predominantly promote insect and bird life and a large gardening area for the growing of plants, fruits and vegetables & also an orchard. The bigger picture in all of this is to provide a facility that can engage all children in the curriculum particular targeting maths, literacy and science.
